Recognise the currency
The Turkish lira is Türkiye’s currency, commonly identified by TRY, TL or the lira symbol. The Central Bank publishes official banknote information. Use current currency identification rather than old references to the ‘new lira’, and do not use a historic exchange-rate example to budget a future trip.
Separate exchange from acceptance
A bank or exchange service’s current conditions are different from the question of what a shop accepts. Do not assume a foreign currency is usable everywhere. Check the currency and payment method before agreeing a transaction, keep receipts and ask about the actual terms instead of relying on a national generalisation.
Make cash and cards a practical choice
Confirm card acceptance with the actual venue and your bank’s overseas-use settings before departure. For withdrawals or currency conversion, review the information shown before confirming. Carry a manageable payment plan suited to the route; remote stops, a market purchase and a hotel settlement may have different needs. No exchange rate, monetary amount or fixed charge is quoted here.
