Mountains behind the Mediterranean
The Taurus ranges form an important mountain backdrop to southern Anatolia. A coastal-to-interior journey reveals how valleys and passes shape movement across the region.
Walking is a separate activity
Cimbar Canyon, Arpalık Plateau and the Çukurbağ and Eznevit areas provide mountain interests. A view from a vehicle does not include a guided trek or cave exploration.
Passes and natural history
The Cilician Gates connect the Tarsus and Adana side of the mountains with inland Anatolia. Pine, cedar, juniper and other mountain vegetation vary with altitude and location. Ancient travellers, trade routes and religious narratives give the pass historical context; legends associated with distant Ararat should not be confused with a local Taurus stop.
Plan the actual terrain
Identify the route, season and participation needs with a specialist. Do not add a mountain walk between distant transfers without enough time or confirmed arrangements.
