Founding and expansion
Osman gives the dynasty its name. Mehmed II’s conquest of Constantinople changed its capital setting, while Süleyman’s reign connects imperial expansion with major building patronage.
Patrons with different legacies
Selim II, Ahmed I and Ahmed III connect to different court and architectural settings. The Blue Mosque and public fountains help place individual reigns in Istanbul’s landscape.
The end of the dynasty
Mehmed VI belongs to the final Ottoman period. Keep the sultanate distinct from the later Republic when interpreting palaces, memorials and historical names.
