An older city within the capital
Ankara is Türkiye’s capital, but its history reaches beyond the Republican city. The citadel and surrounding streets create a useful starting point for the older settlement. The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations links the city visit to archaeological cultures from across Anatolia, offering a different experience from viewing ruins in the field.
Ancient, Ottoman and Republican layers
The Temple of Augustus and the nearby Hacı Bayram mosque illustrate neighbouring monuments from different traditions. Roman remains add another layer. Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, belongs to the history and symbolism of the Republic; allow it a deliberate place rather than treating it as a quick roadside stop.
Choose a workable city sequence
The older hill districts, Anıtkabir and modern neighbourhoods are not one pedestrian precinct. Match the day’s interests to ground transport and the actual overnight or station address. Esenboğa Airport is a separate transfer. A museum-led day can complement an Anatolian circuit without assuming that every regional archaeological site is a nearby excursion.
