Choose the purpose of the combination
Istanbul and Athens make an engaging cultural pairing, but the connection works best when each city has a clear place in the journey. Decide whether Athens is a short city stay after a Turkey circuit, the starting point before Istanbul, or one stage in a wider Aegean holiday. That choice determines where the flight belongs and how much time remains for visits.
In Turkey, distinguish an Istanbul stay from a circuit that also reaches Cappadocia or the Aegean region. Adding Athens to a full touring programme requires a new travel stage; it should not quietly remove the time already assigned to your chosen Turkish destinations.
Give Athens its own visiting time
Build the Athens stay around the subjects that interest you: the Acropolis and its archaeological setting, museum time, or walks through the historic neighbourhoods. These are different experiences, with different entry arrangements and walking demands. Seeing the city from a transfer vehicle is not the equivalent of a planned visit.
Ask for the selected visits, admission arrangements and guiding to be stated separately. Keep an independent period for a neighbourhood walk or a meal if that matters to you. A day excursion or an island extension is an additional choice with its own transport and timing; it is not implied by the word Athens.
Plan the connection before fixing the last night
Use the actual airports, flight dates and arrival times when comparing route proposals. Check which airport transfer belongs to each booking, what happens between hotel checkout and departure, and whether the next accommodation can receive an early arrival. Flight, baggage and change conditions must be read for the ticket offered.
A single-country tour ending in Istanbul and a separate Athens stay may have different service providers and cancellation conditions. Request one clear written outline showing who arranges each stage and which items are included. Do not assume the international connection is part of a land-only programme.
